AND ORGANISATIONS

The
Prime Minister's Office
is
responsible for carrying out the policy
of the Government of Iceland on the Information Society.
University
of Iceland
conducts research in various fields related to Language Technology,
such as Linguistics, Computer
Science and Electrical
and Computer Engineering. The
Department of Icelandic launched a MA
Program in Language Technology
in
2002.
Reykjavik
University
conducts
research in Language
Technology and other related
fields,
such as Artificial
Intelligence.
Individual courses in Language Technology are also taught at the
University.
National
and
University Library of Iceland
The
National and University Library works on producing electronic
versions of older Icelandic texts,
thus
making them available for use in Language Technology projects. Many of
these texts are on-line at Timarit.is.
The
Library also harvests
Icelandic web pages.
Ministry
of Education, Science and Culture
The
Ministry initiated a report
on Icelandic Language Technology
in 1999. Based
on the conclusions of that report, the Ministry established a special LangTec
Project.
The
Icelandic
Society for Information Processing
The
main function
of
the ISIP
is organising conferences and lectures,
co-operating in international work with other societies, publishing the
electronic journal Tölvumál
on domestic topics and running a committee
dedicated to translating computer terms into Icelandic. The committee
has published a Dictionary
of Computer Terms
(Tölvuorðasafn)
which is accessible online.
Icelandic
Standards
is
the national standards body of Iceland. Several standards are related
to language and Language Technology, for instance ÍST

(Information
Technology - Icelandic demands).
The
Árni Magnússon Institute of Icelandic Studies
At
the
Institute, work on the digitation of
Icelandic medieval manuscripts and texts is in progress. The Institute
participates in a Nordic project for the establishment of a Medieval
Nordic Text Archive (MENOTA).
The Department
of Lexicography maintains
several language-data archives, including Ritmálsskrá,
an on-line
lexical database with citations from Icelandic texts from
1540 to the present day. The Department has also built a Morphological
Database of Icelandic,automatic
grammatical tagging of Icelandic,
and is currently working on A
Tagged Corpus of Icelandic. The Department
of Language Policy is the
official
coordinator of all
terminological work in Iceland. The Department maintains The
Icelandic Word Bank,
an on-line terminology database.
Ministry
for Foreign Affairs - Translation Centre
has
translated Acts falling under the EEA Agreement as well as the
Agreement itself. At present, the main task of the Centre is to
translate Acts falling under the Decisions of the EEA Joint Committee
and other texts related to the European Economic Area.
The Centre has built an on-line searchable dictionary.
